DATA

SITUATION

It extends through the Barcelona regions of Maresme and Vallès. It includes the municipalities of Alella, Argentona, Cabrils, El Masnou, La Roca del Vallès, Martorelles, Montornès del Vallès, Montgat, Orrius, Premià de Dalt, Premià de Mar, Santa Mª de Martorelles, Sant Fost de Campsentelles, Teià, Tiana, Vallromanes, Vilanova del Vallès and Vilasar de Salt. The main characteristic of the area is the urban environment that compresses this small extension of vineyards; in fact, it is one of the smallest areas in Spain.

CLIMATE

A typical Mediterranean microclimate, with mild winters and hot dry summers. It is important the action of the mountain range that acts as a protective barrier against the winds and condenses the humidity coming from the sea.

SOILS

A distinction can be made between those of the interior slope of the coastal mountain range, of clayey composition, and those located closer to the sea. The latter, known as Sauló, are the most characteristic. Nearly white in color, they are distinguished by their high permeability and great capacity to retain the sun's rays, which helps the grapes to ripen better.

VARIETIES

White: pansa blanca (similar to xarel-lo in other Catalan regions), garnatxa blanca, pansa rosada, picapoll, malvasía, macabeo, parellada, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and chenin blanc.
Reds (minority): monastrell, garnatxa negra, ull de llebre (tempranillo), merlot, pinot noir, syrah, cabernet sauvignon, sumoll and mataró.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES

WHITES
These are the most characteristic of the area. A distinction can be made between the traditional Alella, light, aromatic and quite smooth (although without being sweet), and other dry wines, pale straw-colored, fresh, with good fruity features, balanced, quite fine and with a certain persistence in the mouth. There are also interesting examples of barrel-fermented whites.
ROSÉS
They are not the most abundant, but very correct rosés are produced, fresh and quite tasty in the mouth.
RED WINE
The most interesting examples in the area are those made from Grenache, although foreign varieties are also included in the blends, especially Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, where they stand out for their balsamic and fruity features.
