DESCRIPTION
This is the province with the third largest vineyard area in Argentina, as well as the one with the longest history of winemaking in the country. It is located to the north of the province of Mendoza, and like the latter, it is also bordered to the west by the Andes Mountains, benefiting from the freshness of its air that manages to soothe the characteristic heat of this area.
NUMBER OF HECTARES: 8.518
RANGE OF ALTITUDE: 600m. - 1.350 m.
PREDOMINANT VARIETIES
Whites: Riojan Torrontés, Muscat of Alexandria and Chardonnay.
Reds: bonarda, malbec, syrah and cabernet sauvignon.
CLIMATE AND SOILS
The climate is warm and has a very low rainfall regime - 130 mm per year - which will result in riper wines. The scorching Riojan sun requires a viticultural structure that protects the grapes from the exhausting heat, which is why it is not uncommon to find vineyards with a high foliage load. Its soils are loamy (clay, silt and earth) and its thermal integrals are high, as is the case in San Juan.
PRODUCING AREAS
The areas with the highest concentration of vineyards in the province are Chilecito and Nonogasta, while fame has been harvested by the Famatina Valley, where the vines are protected by two mountain ranges: Sierra de Famatina and Sierra de Velasco.
