Mazuelo
Synonyms: carignane (Languedoc- Roussillon), carignano (Sardinia), cariñano, cariñena and crujillón (Aragón), mazuela (Rioja) and samsó (Catalonia). The main synonyms in Spain are cariñena, carinyena and samsó.
It is a very widespread variety in the north-east of Spain. Late budding and late ripening, it is very sensitive to powdery mildew and some downy mildew, but its main singularity is that it is probably the Spanish variety most resistant to drought and over ripening, being able to maintain a high acidity at high alcoholic maturities. This strength against drought and heat makes it a great asset in the face of climate change.
The wines obtained from this variety tend to be very unique as they can have a high alcoholic content, but at the same time be very balanced and balanced due to their good acidity.
These qualities allow it to be used as a blending option with other wines of lighter varieties (mainly in Rioja) or as a single varietal, producing wines of great structure, body and colour, with balance and sapidity in the mouth. The best quality values of this variety can be found today in Priorat.
