SITUATION

In the Priorat region (Tarragona). It includes Baix Priorat, part of Alt Priorat and several municipalities of Ribera d'Ebre, which were already integrated in the Falset subzone. It is made up of 16 municipalities: La Bisbal de Falset, Cabaces, Capçanes, Cornudella de Montsant, La Figuera, Els Guiamets, Marçá, Margalef, El Masroig, Pradell, La Torre de Fontaubella, Ulldemolins, Falset, El Molar, Darmós and La Serra d'Almos.

CLIMATE

Although located in a Mediterranean area, the mountains that surround the area isolate it somewhat from the sea, providing a certain continentality. Hence, it benefits from the thermal contrasts between day and night, an important quality factor in the ripening of the grapes. However, it also receives winds from the sea laden with humidity, which help to compensate for the water deficit in summer. The average annual rainfall is between 500 and 600 mm.

SOILS

There are three main types: compact and calcareous, with pebbles on the periphery of the DO; granitic sands in Falset; and siliceous slates (the same llicorellas of Priorat) in certain areas of Falset and Cornudella. The vineyard is planted at a wide range of altitudes, from 200 to 700 meters above sea level.

VARIETIES

Whites: chardonnay, garnacha blanca, macabeo, small-grain muscat, pansal and parellada.
Reds: cabernet sauvignon, cariñena, garnacha tinta, garnacha peluda, merlot, monastrell, picapoll, syrah, tempranillo and mazuela.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES

WHITES
The most characteristic are the ones based on garnacha blanca, which produces full-bodied wines with a certain structure and some characteristic notes of herbs and hints of Mediterranean scrubland that the variety provides. Macabeo whites are somewhat lighter, fine, fresh and fruity.

ROSÉS
There are not many examples, but in general they are based on Grenache. They are tasty and fruity, perhaps a bit bodied, but very pleasant and with good definition of red fruits.

RED WINE
These are undoubtedly the most characteristic product of the DO. They can rely almost exclusively on Grenache or integrate this variety and Carignan with foreign varieties, especially Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah. The young wines are dark, fruity, fleshy and tasty. The best examples among those aged in wood have high levels of fruit concentration: they are powerful, fleshy, with a significant alcoholic component. Mineral notes may also appear. They are reminiscent of those from Priorat, although perhaps with a little less extraction and forcefulness.

TRADITIONAL WINES
These are liqueur wines (sweet), based mainly on Grenache. They are usually unctuous and doughy in the mouth, with aromas and flavors of raisins and stewed fruit.
