SITUATION

The region extends along the banks of the Miño and Sil rivers in the south of the province of Lugo and the northern part of the province of Orense; it encompasses 19 municipalities in these areas.

CLIMATE

Quite variable depending on the different areas. Less rainfall and slightly cooler climate with more continental influence in the Sil valley, and more Atlantic character in the Miño valley. The altitude, on the other hand, also marks differences and the vineyards closer to the rivers and in favorable orientation (south-southeast) are slightly warmer.

SOILS

The soils are of high acidity, but the composition varies considerably from one area of the region to another. The vineyard sits on steeply sloping terraces and does not exceed 400 - 500 meters in altitude.

SUBZONES

Amandi (Lugo), Chantada (Lugo), Quiroga-Bibei (Lugo-Ourense), Ribeiras do Miño (Lugo) and Ribeiras do Sil (Ourense).

VARIETIES

White: albariño, loureira, treixadura, godello, dona blanca and torrontés.
Reds: mencía, brancellao, merenzao, garnacha tintorera, tempranillo, sousón, caíño tinto and mouratón.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES

WHITES
Albariño and Godello single varietals are produced. The former are greenish yellow in color, with the character and fruity power typical of Albariño; the latter are somewhat fresher than those of Valdeorras and less glyceric in the mouth. There are also other whites that are the result of blending different varieties; the latter are straw yellow in color and have a fruity aroma.

RED WINE
The single-varietal mencía wines, the most characteristic of the region, have a medium-depth garnet red color; on the nose they are very fresh, aromatic and also balsamic; on the palate they are dry, fruity and without a marked structure. However, the most characteristic feature of its wines is their marked minerality.
