DESCRIPTION
This is the southernmost production area of the country and as such has lower temperatures due to its latitude compared to the low temperatures also found in Salta due to its altitude. We are talking about an area subjected to climatic extremes, with very cold winters and with the appropriate warmth for proper ripening at the time when the grapes need it most.
With a somewhat less cold climate than its neighbor Neuquén, but with a higher average altitude, Río Negro concentrates in its Alto Valle del Río Negro region the best vineyards of the Riojan torrontés and semillón varieties, although the French varieties merlot, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc should not be overlooked either.
NUMBER OF HECTARES: 2,636
ALTITUDE RANKING: 370 m.
PREDOMINANT VARIETIES
Whites: Riojan torrontés, semillón and sauvignon blanc.
Reds: merlot, pinot noir and malbec.
CLIMATE AND SOILS
The climate is purely continental, with very low relative humidity due to the influence of the strong Patagonian winds, forcing some vineyards to protect them with rows of trees. The very low rainfall rate -barely more than 190 mm per year- and the large number of hours of sunshine make Río Negro an area to be taken into account for the production of wines with personality and extreme quality. The lack of water makes it necessary to use irrigation in the vineyard, especially if we take into account that the soils are mainly sandy, which favors water loss.
PRODUCING AREAS
Upper Negro River Valley.
