SITUATION
The Valdeorras wine region is located in the northwest of the province of Orense. It includes the municipalities of Larouco, Petín, O Bolo, A Rua, Vilamartín, O Barco, Rubiá and Carballeda de Valdeorras.
CLIMATE
Continental with Atlantic influences. The average temperature is about 11°C and the rainfall rate ranges between 850 and 1,000 mm. per year.
SOILS
They are quite varied. It is possible to distinguish between those that rest on slates, shallow, with abundant stones and silty textures; those that rest on granitic materials, deeper and richer in sand; and those that settle on sediments and terraces, where boulders are usually abundant.
VARIETIES
White: godello, dona blanca, palomino, loureira, treixadura, dona branca, albariño, torrontes and lado.
Reds: mencía, merenzao, grao negro, garnacha, tempranillo (araúxa), brancellao, sousón, caíño tinto, espadeiro, ferrón, gran negro, garnacha tintureira and mouratón.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES
WHITES
Made from the Godello variety, they offer a high level of quality. They have a pale yellow or straw yellow color. Aromatically they are not excessively intense, but very fine and delicate, with pleasant floral notes. In the mouth they are characterized by their tastiness, excellent acidity and, often, by a greasy touch.
RED WINE
The Mencia variety is used for these wines, which are mainly young reds that combine an Atlantic and Mediterranean character, with well-defined fruity aromas; they are dry and fruity in the mouth.
