SITUATION
In the province of Murcia. It includes the municipalities of Bullas, Cehegín, Mula, Liego, Ricote, and part of the municipalities of Calasparra, Caravaca, Moratalla and Lorca.
CLIMATE
Mediterranean, with an average annual temperature of 15.6ºC and scarce rainfall (average of 300 mm per year). Another defining element is the heavy downpours and storms that occur in the area.
SOILS
Brown-limestone crust and alluvial soils. The land is rugged and determined by the configuration of small valleys with their own microclimates. There are three distinct zones: one in the north-northeast with an altitude of 400-500 meters; another in the central part, located at 500-600 meters altitude; and the third in the western and northwestern part, the highest altitude (500-810 meters), with the greatest concentration of vineyards and the best quality potential.
VARIETIES
Whites: macabeo (main), airén, chardonnay, malvasía, moscatel, moscatel de grano menudo and sauvignon blanc.
Reds: monastrell (main), tempranillo, cabernet sauvignon, syrah, merlot, garnacha, garnacha tintorera and petit verdot.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES
WHITES
Made with grapes of the Macabeo variety, grown in the higher areas of the wine region. They are correct wines with good acidity and easy to drink.
In those made with Monastrell, the varietal character of this grape variety stands out. They are light, pleasant and easy to drink. Those made from Garnacha provide great flavor in the mouth.
RED WINE
Monastrell stands out for its Mediterranean character, notes of sunny fruit and good fruit expression, although they are somewhat less rounded than those from Jumilla and Alicante. On the other hand, the inclusion in the blend of new varieties such as syrah or petit verdot provide greater structure and fruitiness to the reds.
