Cariñena blanca
Synonyms: mazuelo blanco, carinyena blanc, samsó blanc, carignan blanc
White grape of late budding and ripening, cultivated in the south of France and in the Levantine area of Catalonia, Spain.
It is usually used in blended wines due to its acidity and body. Aromatically it is not really expressive, that's why we see some winemakers using it on wines where the winemaking process makes a big difference. As is always the case in the world of wine, there are always examples that can help us out. Although they are few in number, some wineries have opted to bottle this grape on their own with very good results. The Parés Baltá winery in Penedès and the Espolla Cooperative in Empordà have managed to produce this grape with great skill and a great aromatic and, of course, taste expression.
