SITUATION
The biggest extension of vineyards is in the north of the island, in the municipality of Vallehermoso (about 385 hectares) and in Hermigua. The rest is distributed between Agulo, Valle Gran Rey -in the capital of La Gomera, San Sebastián- and Alajeró, on the slopes of the Garajonay peak.
CLIMATE
The island benefits from a subtropical climate to which is added, as we ascend towards the highest peaks of the Garajonay peak, a phenomenon of permanent humidity called "sea of clouds" and caused by the trade winds. This humid air from the north collides with the mountain systems, creating a kind of horizontal rain, which designs a particular ecosystem formed by lush valleys. The average temperature is 20 degrees all year round.
SOILS
The soils that dominate in the highest part of the mountain are deep and clayey, while as one descends to lower altitudes the Mediterranean style scrubland appears, with abundant stone and terraces, similar to those of Priorat.
VARIETIES
White: forastera gomera (90%), listán blanca, marmajuelo, malvasía and pedro ximénez.
Reds: listán negra (5%), negramoll (2%), listán negro and negramoll.
Experimental: tintilla castellana, cabernet sauvignon and ruby cabernet.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES
WHITES
Almost all of them are based on the forastera, subjected to artisanal elaborations that tend to suffer from over-ripening and rustic and warm notes. The best examples correspond to those from higher areas and lower humidity, where wild and scrubland notes appear.
RED WINE
The warm climate imprints a stamp on most of the island's young reds, with a slightly sweet taste and balsamic notes. The greenness, which can be appreciated in many of them, is the result of the high productions that, in a few cases, offer a varietal pattern of the listán negra and negramoll with which they are made.
