SITUATION
In the southwestern area of the province of Guadalajara. It includes the municipalities of Albalate de Zorita, Albares, Almoguera, Almonacid de Zorita, Driebes, Escariche, Escopete, Fuenteovilla, Illana, Loranca de Tajuña, Mazuecos, Mondéjar, Pastrana, Pioz, Pozo de Almoguera, Sacedón, Sayatón, Valdeconcha, Yebra and Zorita de los Canes.
CLIMATE
Temperate Mediterranean type. The average annual temperature is around 18°C and the rainfall is around 500 mm. per year.
SOILS
A distinction is made between red soils on silty-clayey sediments with gravel, characteristic of the southern area of the wine region, and others of a brownish-calcareous type settled on loams, sandstones and conglomerates found in the northern area (municipalities of Anguix, Mondéjar, Sacedón, etc.).
VARIETIES
Whites: malvar (the majority, representing 80% of the whites), macabeo, muscatel de grano menudo, sauvignon blanc, torrontés and verdejo.
Reds: cencibel (tempranillo, representing 95% of the reds), cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES
WHITES
Those made in a more modern style usually have a pale straw yellow color; they are slightly fruity and fresh on the nose and light and fruity in the mouth; in the more traditional ones, however, notes of over-ripening may appear.
ROSÉS
In general they are light, soft and quite pleasant, although without excessive aromatic intensity.
RED WINE
Probably the most interesting in the area. Made mainly from cencibel, their style is close to that of the Manchego wines: good aromatic intensity, with a presence of ripe fruit, smooth and tasty in the mouth.
