SITUATION

In the province of Barcelona, between the Catalan pre-coastal mountain range and the plains that reach the Mediterranean coast. Three distinct areas can be distinguished: Upper Penedès, Central or Middle Penedès and Lower Penedès.

SUBZONES

Upper Penedès. The vineyard can reach an altitude of up to 800 meters; the traditional characteristic variety is Parellada, which is better adapted to cooler areas.
Central or Middle Penedès. A large part of the production in this area is destined for the production of cava; the most abundant traditional varieties are macabeo and xarel.lo.
Lower Penedès. This is the area closest to the sea, with lower altitude and wines with a marked Mediterranean character.

CLIMATE

Mediterranean type, generally warm and mild; warmer in the Lower Penedès area due to the influence of the Mediterranean, with slightly lower temperatures in the Middle Penedès and Upper Penedès, where there are characteristics typical of the pre-coastal climate (greater contrast between maximum and minimum temperatures, more frequent frosts and rainfall rates that, in some places, can reach 990 liters per square meter).

SOILS

The soils are deep, neither too sandy nor too clayey, permeable and retain rainwater well. The soil is poor in organic matter and not very fertile.

VARIETIES

White: macabeo, xarel.lo, parellada, chardonnay, riesling, gewürztraminer, chenin blanc, moscatel de Alejandría, garnatxa blanca, sumoi blanca, forcada and viognier.

Reds: grenache, merlot, carignan, ull de llebre (tempranillo), pinot noir, monastrell, cabernet sauvignon syrah, sumoll, moneu and petit verdot.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES

WHITES
The classics of the area, made with the varieties xarel.lo, macabeo, parellada stand out for their fruity character and great lightness. They are fresh, pleasant wines to drink throughout the year. The barrel-fermented wines, mainly single varietals of xarel.lo and macabeo, have a greater capacity to withstand the passage of time due to the contribution of tannins from the wood. Another important chapter is that of chardonnay whites, whether young (fruity, with lemony notes and good varietal character) or barrel-fermented, which combine the fruity personality of chardonnay with creamy notes from the oak. There is a new trend in the elaboration of xarel.lo in which the aim is to extract the most Mediterranean traits. Bright yellow or almost golden in color, they stand out for their aromas of wilted flowers and dried fruits, and for their riper and more oily mouthfeel.

ROSÉS
Modern style, pinkish-raspberry color, powerful, aromatic and fresh. They are made from varieties as different as tempranillo, cabernet, merlot or pinot noir.

RED WINE
Those made with native grapes, generally from Garnacha and Tempranillo, are young, pleasant and easy to drink red wines. As for those aged in wood, they can come from foreign varieties (mainly cabernet sauvignon and merlot), or combine them with local grapes. They integrate the notes of fine wood with fruity aromas of good intensity; in the mouth, they are concentrated and fleshy.
