SITUATION
The production area is located in the eastern part of the island of Mallorca and comprises a total of 18 municipalities: Algaida, Ariany, Artá, Campos, Capdepera, Felanitx, Lluchamajor, Manacor, Mª de la Salud, Montuiri, Muro, Petra, Porreres, Sant Joan, Sant Llorens des Cardasar, Santa Margarita, Sineu and Vilafranca de Bonany.
CLIMATE
Mediterranean in character, with an average temperature of 16º C and slightly cold winters and hot, dry summers. The regime of sea breezes during the summer has an important influence on these lands near the coast. Autumn is the rainiest season and the average annual rainfall is between 400-450 mm.
SOILS
Soil formed by limestone rocks that give soils of calcareous-clay character. The reddish tones of these soils are the result of the presence of iron oxide. The clays and calcium and magnesium carbonates provide, in turn, a whitish color that can also be observed in the vineyard.
VARIETIES
Whites: prensal blanc, macabeo, parellada, giró blanc, moscatel and chardonnay.
Reds: callet (the most abundant), manto negro, fogoneu, tempranillo, monastrell, cabernet sauvignon, gargollassa, merlot and syrah.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES
WHITES
The characteristics of white wines are conditioned by the special characteristics of the foreign varieties. The grape press gives rise to wines that express in a singular way the character of the terroir of the area.
ROSÉS
They follow the line of the Binissalem rosés, although the distinction comes from those made with French grapes. The sensory clarity given off by these varieties does not prevent them, in certain cases, from being a little heavy on the nose.
RED WINE
They share the style that characterizes the Mediterranean adaptation of the French varieties with which they are made. Thus, they give off balsamic touches on the nose; in the mouth they offer soft and ripe tannins; they are tasty and full-bodied. Those of the native Callet variety show perfectly the style of the area, where ripe fruit and hints of rockrose and scrubland coexist.
