SITUATION
The Priorat, Gratallops, El Lloar, La Morera de Montsant (with its aggregate Escaladei), Poboleda, Porrera, Torroja del Priorat, La Vilella Alta and La Vilella Baixa, also the northern part of the municipality of Falset and the eastern part of El Molar. Inland it is distributed in 12 wine production zones, which correspond to the towns or villages that form it. Each of the zones responds to geographical, environmental, climatic, viticultural, historical and economic variables, through which the wine is identified, that go beyond the existing administrative boundaries. The villa zones that make up the DO are called: Vi de la Vila de Bellmunt del Priorat, Vi de la Vila de Escaladei, Vi de la Vila de Gratallops, Vi de la Vila de El Lloar, Vi de la Vila de La Morera de Montsant, Vi de la Vila de Poboleda, Vi de la Vila de Porrera, Vi de la Vila de Torroja del Priorat, Vi de la Vila de la Vilella Alta, Vi de la Vila de la Vilella Baixa, Vi de la Vila dels Masos de Falset and Vi de la Vila de les Solanes del Molar.
CLIMATE
Although with Mediterranean influences, it is mild and dry. One of the important characteristics is the absence of rainfall during the summer, which favors an excellent sanitary state of the vines. The average rainfall is between 500 and 600 mm. per year.
SOILS
This is probably the most distinctive element of the area and, precisely, the one that has catapulted it to the forefront of quality, not only in Spain, but worldwide. The soils, poor and of volcanic constitution, are formed by small sheets of slate (llicorella) and give a marked mineral character to the wines. The vineyard sits on terraces and steep slopes.
VARIETIES
Authorized and recommended red varieties: red Grenache and Carignan or Samsó.
Other authorized red varieties: hairy garnacha, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, tempranillo, pinot noir, merlot, syrah and picapoll negro.
Authorized white varieties: garnacha blanca, macabeo, pedro ximénez, moscatel de Alejandría, moscatel de grano menudo, pansal, picapoll blanco and chenin.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES
WHITES
They are mainly made from macabeo and white garnacha. Straw yellow in color, they have fruity scents and hints of mountain herbs; in the mouth they also show their Mediterranean character: they are somewhat warm and with wild nuances.
ROSÉS
They are perhaps the least characteristic of the region. Due to the warm climate in which the grapes ripen, they are identified by their ripe fruit notes; they are warm and tasty in the mouth.
RED WINE
The star product of the region. Made from Grenache and Carignan combined in the high-end wines with smaller percentages of foreign varieties, they are characterized by their intense cherry color, very covered. The best offer a nose of great complexity, with notes of very ripe fruit and marked terroir character (due to the influence of the slate soils) which gives abundant mineral notes. On the mouth they have great character and structure; they are powerful, fleshy, warm and, at the same time, full of acidity, markedly tannic and very persistent.
RANCIOS AND SWEET WINES
The traditional rancios of the area offer almond aromas and notes of mountain herbs; in the mouth they are warm, tasty and with a good oxidative evolution. There is also a range of sweet wines made according to more modern criteria. They have a deep cherry color; on the nose they develop aromas of black fruits, almost raisined, and toasted notes from their aging in oak; in the mouth they are sweet, doughy, very fruity and very balanced due to their good acidity.
