Sumoll
Synonyms: sumoi, sumoll tinto, sunier, vigiriega, vijariego negra (Canary Islands).
Fertile and productive variety with early to medium budding and late ripening. Its clusters are very large.
It is a less cultivated native variety, most of the vineyards are in Catalonia where it usually contributes to blends, although there are also producers who bet on single-varietal reds and rosés. Sumoll wines usually show medium-low robe, red fruit, green herbs, good acidity and marked tannins. The tannins in young wines can have a certain roughness that disappears with aging. In the Canary Islands the variety was introduced as vijariego negro. There, all the particularities of the volcanic terroir are added to the already defined style.
