DATA

SITUATION

It includes 12 municipalities in the province of Zamora (Argujillo, Bóveda de Toro, Morales de Toro, El Pego, Peleagonzalo, El Piñero, San Miguel de la Ribera, Sanzoles, Toro, Valdefinjas, Venialbo and Villanueva del Puente) and three in Valladolid (San Román de la Hornija, Villafranca de Duero and the vineyards of Villaester de Arriba and Abajo in the municipality of Pedrosa del Rey), which practically correspond to the agricultural region of the Lower Duero. The production area lies to the south of the Duero river, which crosses the region from east to west.

CLIMATE

Extreme continental type with Atlantic influences and quite arid, with average annual rainfall of 350-400 mm. The winters are harsh (which implies extreme minimum temperatures and a prolongation of the frost period) and the summers are short, not excessively hot and with important thermal oscillations between day and night.

SOILS

The geography of the DO is characterized by a gently undulating relief. The vineyard is located at an altitude between 620 and 850 meters and the soil consists of sandstone, clay and conglomerate sediments with pebbles and gravel. It alternates from silty materials to coarse and fine-grained sandstones with different levels of limestone and marl.

VARIETIES

White: Malvasía castellana, Verdejo, Albillo Real and Moscatel grano menudo.
Reds: Tinta de Toro (majority) and red garnacha.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES

WHITES
Made mainly from Malvasia castellana and also Verdejo, they are pale yellow to greenish-yellow in color; some hints of flowers, fruits and herbs may appear on the nose. The mouth is characterized by a fine bitterness and a medium-high body.

ROSÉS
The main variety used is tinta de Toro, although in some cases it may be accompanied by garnacha. They are made by blending both or as single varietals. Intense pinkish color, with notes of ripe red fruits; in the mouth they are fleshy and fruity.

RED WINE
These are the most characteristic of the region. They can be made with tinta de Toro or garnacha tinta, blended or as single varietals. They have an astringency typical of the tinta de Toro variety, as well as a medium-high alcohol content (13.5 degrees or more) and good acidity indexes. When young, they have a dark cherry color with violet hues; on the nose they have good intensity, with notes reminiscent of blackberries and black fruits in general; in the mouth they are powerful, tasty, fleshy, in some cases with a touch of overripeness and good persistence. The oak-aged wines maintain the ripe fruit notes, combined with the oak and fleshiness in the mouth.
