LOCATION
Straddling the border between Cuenca (to the west) and Toledo (to the northwest), it comprises 25 villages in the former province and three in the latter. However, most of the vineyards are concentrated in Tarancón and the neighboring towns of Cuenca, up to Huete, where the Alcarria begins as the most bordering point of the DO.
CLIMATE
The Sierra de Altamira mountain range forms gentle undulations that rise from an average of 600 meters in La Mancha to 1,200 meters. These variations cause alterations in the continental climate, which is less extreme here, more temperate and with a Mediterranean component. For this reason rainfall is scarce, more typical of a semi-arid climate.
SOILS
Despite covering two provinces with different soil components, the common soils are deep and not very fertile, with a sandy and sandy loam texture, with abundant clay as we approach the banks of the Riansares and Bendija rivers.
VARIETIES
Reds: Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Syrah.
Whites: Verdejo, Muscat de grano menudo, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viura (Macabeo) and Airén.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINES
RED WINE
Most of them are made from cencibel. The young wines or those with some aging are defined by aromas of fresher skins and a more flavorful and rounder body, the result of a tighter balance between alcohol and acidity than in other nearby areas of La Mancha. Those with longer aging combine toasted oak nuances with ripe fruit, while in the mouth they are tasty, with good tannins and light balsamic nuances.
WHITES
They are a minority in the area. At present, they range from macabeo, sauvignon blanc, verdejo or chardonnay. The colors range from straw to bright yellow. They are light, fresh wines with a certain persistence.
