Manto negro
Synonyms: cabelis, mantuo negro.
A red variety of Spanish origin (Mallorca), with medium budding and a medium ripening cycle. This is a grape that, with low yields, easily withstands long ageing in barrels, although in view of the wines tasted in the Peñín Guide, it seems to be more relaxed and expressive in lightly toasted, unobtrusive barrels.
Until a few years ago, it was common to find it in wines with very ripe nuances, however, new winemakers are now seeking greater freshness and tension, which has brought about great improvements in the resulting wines. In the few single-varietal wines found in Spain, its uniqueness and its tense, structured finish can be appreciated, all wrapped up in a rustic and fruity style.
When blended, it is usually accompanied by the other great Balearic variety, Callet, which adds freshness and lightness.
