XXI Top Wines From Spain Tasting Showroom

The Top Wines from Spain tasting showroom will be back in November 22 and 23, 2021 at IFEMA (Madrid) and will once again offer the largest sample of quality Spanish wine.  There, wineries and professionals will meet again to give a boost to the wine sector.

The Top Wines from Spain tasting, the key event in the industry that Peñín organizes every year, will reopen its doors in its twenty-first edition. More than 400 Spanish wineries from all wine-producing regions will present over 2,000 references.

The Top Wines from Spain tasting showroom is the meeting point between producers and professionals with a buyer and prescriber profile, and will be consolidated as the best promotional platform to reactivate commercial relations and to boost one of the sectors most damaged by the pandemic.

All kinds of winemaking projects will be present at this showroom: from the best-known wineries and groups to small family wineries with limited production or more personal proposals. As usual, Peñín will maintain its commitment to quality by selecting only those wines that have obtained a rating of 90 points or more in the Peñín Guide.

For the first time, the event will have a special area dedicated to the Best Vermouths, i.e. those that have obtained 90 or more points at the Peñín Vermouth Guide, the only one dedicated exclusively to this wine-based beverage.  In addition, the show will feature a full program of activities, including tastings and masterclasses.

Ribeira Sacra will open the programme of activities, at the XXI Top Wines from Spain event, with the tasting under the title "El sabor de un paisaje" (The flavour of a landscape). In it, the renowned oenologist Mª Isabel Mijares will present a selection of wines from this production area.

Campo de Borja wines will return, once again, to the Salón de los Mejores. José Ignacio Gracia, secretary of the D.O., will lead the tasting "Repeat with me... gar na cha", which will take place at 2.30pm on Monday and will feature eight references that will show the personality, quality and complexity of the wines made from Garnacha, the main variety of the appellation.

Attendees are invited to discover the wines of Tarsus, a winery located in Anguix (Burgos), right in the heart of Ribera del Duero, which stands out for its single varietals and coupages made with tinta del país and cabernet sauvignon. Its oenologist, Teresa Rodríguez, will be in charge of presenting its most representative references at the tasting "Redesigning the future of Tarsus".

Day one will close with the presentation of the Spanish Wine Academy, a project by Bodegas Ramón Bilbao that aims to introduce Spanish wine professionals and amateurs to the world of Spanish wine. "Discover the diversity of Spain as a wine country and its main wine regions" is the title of the tasting that will cover eight designations of origin, eight landscapes and eight wines, and will be led by Rodolfo Bastida, general manager of the wine division of Zamora Company, Alberto Saldón, head of the Spanish Wine Academy, and Carlos González, director of the Peñín Guide.

The tasting will also pay tribute to La Palma and its winemaking tradition by including a wine made on the Canary Island.

On Tuesday at 11.30 a.m., professionals will be able to discover the secrets of Cava during an activity that will present the history and winemaking of this appellation of origin, the benchmark for sparkling wines in our country. In the tasting "D.O. Cava: the new era of excellence", sommelier Xavi Viles will present a selection of seven sparkling wines from seven renowned wineries, all of them rated with 95 points or more by the Peñín Guide.

This year's tasting programme will end with the wines of Bizkaiko Txakolina. The session, entitled "Bizkaiko Txakolina: evolution and revolution of a wine with its own identity", will be presented by the sommelier from Bilbao, Iñaki Suarez, and will feature the best whites from the D.O., wines that stand out for their strong personality.
